Sprecklesville Easement
Instead of becoming another stretch of high-priced homes, some 20 acres of Sprecklesville beachfront and adjacent lands will be forever preserved as open space and provide permanent public access to the shoreline thanks to an agreement between developer Henry Spencer and the Maui Coastal Land Trust.
The intent of the agreement is to preserve the undeveloped land, popularly known as "Euro Beach or "Camp 1 Beach." The partnership between Stable Road LLC and the Maui Coastal Land Trust means that development will never be allowed along a beach that has become an increasingly critical recreation resource in the face of pressure of population growth on Maui.
"It is a beautiful place to fish, windsurf and to just relax and enjoy the beauty of our island home," said MCLT Executive Director Dale Bonar.
Spencer owns a total of approximately 70 acres along Stable Road running from the ocean to Hana Highway. According to the complex arrangement, he gave up the right to develop two beachfront lots potentially worth millions. He is also donating an acres of land for expansion of the Kaunoa Senior Center in Pa`ia. Spencer will be allowed to offer for sale 16 house lots along Hana Highway ranging in size from half an acre to an acre.
The protected Sprecklesville acreage is also being down-zoned at the developer's request to 'Open Space' designation. During the public hearings for this development, the Maui County Council lauded Spencer for his willingness to listen and respond to the views of the community. Members of the Planning Commission and County County also commented that many generations would benefit from his generosity.
