Makila Nui
Setting a new precedence. . . Makila Nui Easement in West Maui Signed
Many fear a suburban sprawl along the West Maui mountains above Honoapi`ilani Highway. The Maui Coastal Land Trust has worked in co-operation with Makila Land Company to protect a large tract of land in the design of nine large lot (25 to 65 acres each) homesteads above the Mahanalua-Launiupoko area – many identify the area as 'cut mountain.'
281 acres of the 321 acre area will now remain in open space– including Pu`u Hipa and Pu`u Mahanalua, the two landmark hills just south of Launiupoko park. The easement permanently protects the beautiful hillside view planes, sensitive native plants, unusual geologic formations and archaeological features. Public access to hiking trails is also ensured by the easement.
As the small community grows, MCLT will eventually work with the homeowners association in continued protection of the area, its natural assets and respectful access.
