Maui Coastal Land Trust has accepted the transfer of this scenic viewpoint easement from the Maui Open Space Trust. The shoreline access corridor, adjacent to the Kapalua Bay Hotel, is a significant shorebird nesting area and important to local fishermen. |
Birdman of Hawea
Where there were once one or two burrows (or nests) of 'ua'u kane or wedgetail shearwater out on Hawea Point in Kapalua five years ago, MCLT Project Manager Scott Fisher recently reported almost 200 burrows of the precious island birds in a easement inspection with State Biologist Fern Duvall.
The story behind this success is Isao Nakagawa. The local fisherman, retired from Maui Land & Pine, enjoys Hawea almost every day. "Isao is out there trapping predators that would normally feast on the nest eggs." said Fisher. "He protects the birds, checks on them often and I think they accept him. He has their "'ua'u" sounding call down pat."
Nakagawa is a perfect example of the partnerships needed in our on-going land stewardship efforts. Since MCLT took on this easement in 2003, we've been able to maintain communication with adjacent land owners regarding the burgeoning nesting area and support Nakagawa with needed tools & equipment.
At only about two-acres, Hawea Point is MCLT's smallest easement holding, but has proven to be an incredible gem – thanks to Isao Nakagawa.
